GERMANTON, NC ~ Mr. Grover Cleveland Young, 77, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, at Forsyth Medical Center.

 

He was born in Stokes County to Foy Roscoe and Mamie Moran Young.

 

He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran with the rank of sergeant who received the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. Mr. Young was a self-employed barber for over 35 years, a member of Freedom Baptist Church, an avid hunter and enjoyed farming and gardening.

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.

 

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Opal Morton Young; two daughters, Golda Y. (Mike) Harrington of Salisbury and Cheryl Y. (Jim) Wolfe of Elkin; a son, G. Vincent (Kim) Young of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Laura Y. (Franklin) Smith of Kernersville and Roxie Y. (Tommy) Smith of Walnut Cove; two brothers, Woodrow (Jo) Young of Winston-Salem and Roscoe (Juanita) Young of Walnut Cove; eight grandchildren, Rachel, Dana and Trent Harrington, Meredith (Robby) Shaw, Mary Kathryn (Brent) Lane, Taylor Wolfe, Joshua and Julie Young; and two great-granddaughters, Taylor and Tara Shaw.

 

An 11 a.m. funeral service will be held Monday, Dec. 15, at Burroughs Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Bruce Walker officiating. A military graveside service conducted by King American Legion Post 290 will follow in Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall.

GERMANTON, NC ~ Mrs. Mattie Opal Morton Young, 85, died Friday, March 5, 2010 at Liberty Commons Nursing Center in Salisbury.

 

She was born May 8, 1924 in Stokes County to James Peter and Vesta Martin Morton.

 

She was a member of Freedom Baptist Church in Rural Hall and was a 1941 graduate of Pine Hall High School. Mrs Young was retired from the Stokes County School System after 13 years of service.

 

She married Grover Cleveland Young in December, 1946.

 

A 2:30 p.m. funeral service will be held on Sunday, March 7, 2010, at Burroughs Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ed Sears officiating. Burial will follow at Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall.
