Barbara Sue was born in Winston-Salem, NC, in a house at 422 West 16th Street. She was the second child in the family of Carl Theodore and Joy Mildred Rierson Hutchins. Soon after her birth, her family moved to a house with a front porch swing at Glenn Avenue and 27th Street, and later, with her Grandparents and Aunts, to the large Benbow House on Ogburn Avenue. For a short time, her family lived on Clark (now Mentor) Street, while her Daddy and others built a new house at 3706 Ogburn Avenue. Sue attended Mineral Springs Elementary School and High School, about 1/2 block from her house. After the High School burned in 1942, she was bussed to Oak Summit School and then returned to the partially restored school (with the addition of old army barracks). In 1949, she graduated from the newly built Mineral Springs High School which was on Ogburn Avenue, one mile north of her home. That summer, she traveled to Louisville, Kentucky to care for her sister who was sick and pregnant with her first child. Back in North Carolina, she worked at Western Electric for one year, in order to earn enough money to enroll at Atlantic Christian College, in Wilson, NC. It was there that she met this "most wonderful man" who was to become her husband, Fletcher Lee McCoy. After her graduation from college in 1954, Fletcher's two year army tour of Korea ended. He returned to the US and tried to call her at every stop, as he made his way across the country. He finally found her visiting a dormitory in Wilson. By then, most of their friends were assisting them in their reunion at the only open and supervised place for a respectible meeting, the college infirmary. They were married later that summer. While he was in Korea, Fletcher's father and brothers built two similar and adjacent houses, and they moved into one of them immediately upon their marriage. Their two children, Susan Lee and Timothy Andrew, were born soon after.

Barbara Sue taught school at Dover Elementary for one year (54-55) before her first child, Susan, was born. She went back to teaching at Cove City Elementary (1/2 block from her home) for two years (56-57 & 57-58) until her second child, Tim, was born. She kept her teaching skills sharp by being an occasional substitute teacher until Susan was in the 5th grade. Sue then taught for 2 years at Fort Barnwell Elementary School. She interrupted her teaching career during her children's teenage years. Several years later, she resumed teaching 3 & 4 year old children at Cove City Christian Preschool, continuing for 10-15 years.

In her church, Sue has taught Sunday School, was responsible for Christmas Programs, and was heavily involved In the Christian Women's Fellowship. She was a long-time leader in the Ladies Auxiliary to the Cove City Fire Department, heading up the bake sales for many years. Her life was always about service to her family and church, and she is a wonderful example for us all. Barbara was voted Most Likely to Succeed in high school, and also in college. How Prophetic!

Barbara is survived by her two children, three grandchildren, Carla Elizabeth Hoell, Daniel Timothy McCoy and Morgan Leigh McCoy, son-in-law, Gregory Hoell, and daughter-in-law, Debra Hawkins McCoy.
