P. Waldo Hawkins, 87, passed away at his home in the Prestonville Community of Stokes County, NC, Wednesday, July 1, 2015.
A native of Stokes County, Waldo was born on September 14, 1927, to the late James Moir and Allie Gann Hawkins. He was a gifted basketball and baseball player at Sandy Ridge High School. In his senior year, he pitched three no-hitters for the baseball team and played briefly in The Boston Red Sox minor league system before going into the U.S. Army. He served as the Intelligence Officer with the 23rd Infantry Dvision at Ft. Lewis, Washington, until his discharge.
Waldo graduated from North Carolina State University where he obtained B.S. and M.S. degrees in Agricultural Education. He was a retired teacher from the Person County school system in Roxboro, NC, with 30 years of service. He started the Vocational Agriculture and Horticulture programs at Roxboro High School and served as the advisor to the FFA chapter there. Mr. Hawkins was a longtime member of Long Memorial Methodist Church in Roxboro and coached the Northside Hornets boys’ basketball team to two Rec. League championships in 1962, with a record of 12-2 and in 1963, with a record of 14-0. He also was a Hospice volunteer in Stokes County for many years after retirement.
In addition to his parents, Waldo was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Lucille Martin Hawkins; two brothers, Ivan Hawkins and E.B. Hawkins; one sister, Ernestine Chapman; and special friend, Betty Taylor.
Survivors include one son, Phillip Hawkins and wife, Beth, of St. Petersburg, FL; one sister, Madeline Joyce of Sandy Ridge, NC; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by many kids who grew up in the Newell Heights neighborhood of Roxboro who knew him fondly as Uncle Freddie.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, July 7, 2015, at Colonial Funeral Home, 127 Ellisboro Road, Madison, NC. Inurnment will follow at the Ward Family Cemetery, Sandy Ridge, NC. The family will receive friends from 6 until 9 p.m., Monday, at Colonial Funeral Home and all other times at the residence.
